How to Pick a Supplement
Supplements are widely available today and can be purchased anywhere, from the dollar store to the supermarket and beyond. But an uninformed consumer has the unfortunate daunting task of trying to sift through multiple brands of well packed supplements that purport many health advantages. How do you decide?
- Price?
- Brand recognition?
- All-in-one?
- A friend’s recommendation?
- Efficacy?
And then, how much of said supplement do you take?
- What the bottle says?
- What Dr. Google suggests?
- Start low and work your way up (guess)?
- RDA (Recommended dietary allowance) based on Government data
Why are vitamins and minerals named differently and which one is better? Like,
- Magnesium oxide
- Magnesium malate
- Magnesium glycinate
- Magnesium citrate
Supplements shouldn’t be taken lightly both figuratively and literally speaking. After all, you are ingesting them. You could be inadvertently harming yourself or at minimum not helping yourself along with wasting money and time.
Let’s think about our current environment. Soil depletion means we are eating less nutrients, pesticides and herbicides are common to conventional farming. We are ingesting these toxins. We are breathing polluted air and drinking water which is less than pure. All this to say, it’s almost impossible to expect our bodies to perform optimally given the hailstorm it’s up against in our current environment.
Do you know what the most common deficiencies are in developed countries today?
- Protein?
- Magnesium?
- Vitamin D?
- B Vitamins?
- Trace minerals?
The answer is yes to all of the above questions for a multitude of reasons stemming from lifestyle factors to imbalanced diet and processed food.
